Every civilization has run on literacy — the ability to read the systems that govern how it works. What counts as literate keeps changing. Our mission is to identify the languages, in the broadest sense, that a learner needs to participate fully in the century ahead, and to build the programs that teach them. That includes spoken and written language, but increasingly it means AI fluency, computational thinking, and the technical vocabularies of emerging fields.
Most educators still treat literacy as limited to spoken language. We treat it as a transferable skill that applies wherever fluency matters — financial literacy, computer languages, data literacy, and the domain-specific languages of fields like aerospace and physics. Framing a subject as a language rather than a body of facts changes how it's taught: it can be broken into acquisition stages, practiced for fluency, and measured the way any language skill is measured. That reframing is the basis of S.P.A.R.K. (Seek, Play, Apply, Research, Know), our core teaching framework.
Our work runs in three stages. First, we forecast which languages — literal and figurative — will matter most for the next generation's economic and civic participation. Second, we design curricula, metrics, and teaching mediums that build real fluency in them, not just familiarity. Third, we build the pathways — Curiosity Camps, Curiosity Coaches, and the Dream Quest journey — that carry a learner from first exposure to demonstrated mastery. As new fields emerge, the list of essential literacies keeps growing, and that is the work we exist to keep pace with.
